What Happens to Your Photo
When you upload a photo to FaceAncestry, it enters a secure processing pipeline designed for one purpose: generating your visual ancestry-style report. Here is what happens at each step:
- Upload and compression — your photo is received over an encrypted HTTPS connection and compressed for processing. The image is not stored in its original resolution beyond what is needed for analysis.
- AI analysis — the compressed image is passed to a vision-language AI model that reads structural patterns in your facial geometry and generates your ancestry-style report.
- Report generation and storage — the report output (your ethnicity-style matches, ancient echo, and other results) is stored securely so you can access it. The raw photo is not permanently stored for advertising or profiling purposes.
- No third-party sharing — your photo is not shared with advertisers, data brokers, or any third parties for commercial use.
For complete and legally binding details on data handling, storage periods, and your rights, see the Privacy Policy. The how FaceAncestry works page covers the full technical pipeline in more detail.
This Is Not Facial Recognition
Facial recognition and face analysis for ancestry are fundamentally different technologies, and the distinction matters for privacy:
- Facial recognition — identifies who you are by matching your face to a database of known individuals. It is used in security systems, law enforcement, and device authentication. It creates a biometric identity link between your face and your identity.
- Ancestry face analysis — reads structural patterns in your facial geometry to generate visual ancestry-style resemblance matches. It does not identify you, does not match your face to any database of people, and does not create or store a biometric identity profile.
FaceAncestry does not know who you are unless you create an account. Even then, your account is linked to your email address — not to a biometric profile of your face. Your face is processed as an image to produce an entertainment report, not to identify you as an individual.
No DNA Is Involved
A digital photo contains no biological material. It is not possible to extract DNA from an image file. FaceAncestry analyzes the pixel data in your uploaded photo — specifically the structural patterns visible in your facial geometry — and nothing else.
This means:
- No biological sample is taken or required.
- No genetic data is processed, inferred, or stored.
- FaceAncestry does not produce genetic ancestry percentages — only visual similarity scores based on facial structure.
The visual ancestry-style matches in your report are an entertainment interpretation based on how your face looks, not what your genes contain.
Is FaceAncestry Safe to Use?
FaceAncestry is designed as a consumer entertainment platform. From a privacy standpoint, the key things to know:
- No biometric ID creation — your face is not used to create or store a biometric identity profile.
- No facial recognition database — you are not matched against any database of individuals.
- No DNA extraction — impossible from a digital image.
- No data selling — your photo is not sold to advertisers or data brokers.
- Encryption in transit — all photo uploads use HTTPS encryption.
As with any online service, you should be comfortable with the Privacy Policy before uploading any personal photo. If you have specific questions about data handling, the contact page connects you directly with the FaceAncestry team.

Frequently asked questions
Is my photo stored after analysis?
Your photo is processed to generate your visual ancestry-style report. The report output is stored so you can access it — but FaceAncestry does not retain your raw photo for advertising, profiling, or third-party sharing. Full details are in the Privacy Policy.
Does FaceAncestry use facial recognition?
No. FaceAncestry is not a facial recognition system. Facial recognition identifies who you are by matching your face to a database of known individuals. FaceAncestry reads structural patterns in your facial geometry to generate visual ancestry-style resemblance matches — it does not identify you, create a biometric ID, or match you to any database of people.
Does FaceAncestry collect DNA from my photo?
No. It is not possible to extract DNA from a digital image. FaceAncestry analyzes the structural geometry visible in your uploaded photo — facial proportions, bone structure, and feature spacing — as pixel data. There is no biological material involved at any stage.
Is my face data sold to third parties?
FaceAncestry does not sell your photo or facial analysis data to third parties. Your photo is used to generate your entertainment report and for no other commercial purpose. See the full Privacy Policy for complete details on data handling and retention.
